Is Local Online Marketing a Necessity for Small Business?

Online Marketing is an Important Aspect of a Company's Overall Marketing Plan

Many small businesses ignore the importance of local online marketing. They think if they put out a few phone book ads, people will automatically come to their establishment. However, with the advent of the Internet, consumers no longer rely on printed media to research local businesses. In fact, in recent studies, about 70 percent of respondents said that they use the Internet to find businesses in their area. Of this figure, almost 50 percent said they would use that business if it had a positive online review.

These figures cannot be ignored by today’s entrepreneurs. Regardless of where a business is located, if consumers don’t have a reason to check it out, the establishment will remain empty. Local online marketing reverses this phenomenon through the use of geographical keywords. If a business is located in Fairfax County, Virginia, the owner would have to create a website targeting any keyword related to this area. The articles don’t even have to relate to the business at hand if the business is a new idea in general or not typically searched for, as the main point is to generate local traffic.

Of course, if the keywords are too opposite, business owners might want to set up a blog that is completely separate from their main website. At the topmost portions of the blog, they can create banners pointing to their company’s site. By taking this approach, business owners can take advantage of local traffic without directly advertising to the consumer. This will create a greater sense of respect, as consumers feel they are receiving real information.

On the company’s main website, there should be a strong call to action, customer incentives if appropriate and a testimonial page. The incentives can be anything ranging from coupons to free products. The main purpose of your website is to get people interested in what your business is selling. In the meantime, if they are pleased with their experience, you can ask for a review in the testimonial section.

By including a testimonial section, companies put themselves ahead of their competition. In turn, the business will already start off with a positive reputation.

On the other hand, there are many third-party consumer review sites like Google which also addresses the issue of Google local business listing optimization.  There you can find both positive and negative comments. Legally, businesses cannot do anything unless the comments are libelous. However, this does not mean that companies should remain in the dark. Periodically, business owners should conduct online research on their own names. They should research not only their personal names, but also the names associated with their company. If they come across a negative review, it is perfectly acceptable to address the complaint in a professional manner. If the issue gets resolved after the fact, some consumers may actually remove their complaint.

In summary, local online marketing has become a necessity for today’s small business. In some ways it has even surpassed print media. With that being said, if an individual plans on starting a business, they need to create an online marketing campaign. While it will require some investment, businesses will receive indefinite increased exposure.
